The sights, sounds and excitement of one of Buckingham’s oldest traditions will return to Buckingham town centre this October when the Charter Fair rolls into town, bringing with it an array of amazing rides, family attractions, games and sideshows. Taking place on Saturday 17th October and Saturday 24th October, the fair promises two weekends of fun and entertainment for residents and visitors of all ages.
Steeped in history, the Buckingham Charter Fair has been a fixture in the town for centuries. Its origins can be traced back to a charter granted by Queen Mary I in 1554, followed by a second charter from Charles II in 1664. These historic charters established the fair’s enduring place in the town’s calendar and stipulate that it must be held on a Saturday, a tradition that continues to this day.
To accommodate the event safely, road closures will be in place throughout the fair weekends. Market Hill, Market Square and High Street will be closed to traffic from 6am on Friday 16th October until 10am on Sunday 18th October, and again from 6am on Friday 23rd October until 10am on Sunday 25th October. The town centre bus stop will also be closed from 10am on both Fridays until 10am on both Sundays.
The fair will be officially opened at 1pm on 17th by Buckingham Town Mayor, Cllr. Fran Davies, and Buckingham Town Crier, Patrick Laws. Continuing a valued tradition and with thanks to the Showman, Mr. Marshall Nichols, the first hour of the fair, from 1pm to 2pm, will be dedicated to free rides for local children and adults with additional needs, providing an opportunity to enjoy the attractions in a more relaxed environment. Tickets for this hour are arranged in advance through Buckingham Town Council.
The fair will then be open to everyone, with visitors invited to experience all the excitement, colour and atmosphere that has made Buckingham Charter Fair a cherished town tradition for generations.
