A little connection can make a big difference
Loneliness and social isolation can affect anyone, at any stage of life. Sometimes, people around us may be feeling lonely without us even realising.
We can all play a part in helping someone feel more connected, supported and included.
So, how can we help someone experiencing loneliness?
Buckinghamshire Council recommends a simple approach called the 3 A’s: Ask, Assist and Act.
ASK – Start a conversation. Take time to listen and understand someone’s circumstances. Ask about their friendships, relationships and the connections they have with others.
ASSIST – Find out what might make a difference. Would they like information about local activities, community groups or support services? Remember, everyone is different, so support should reflect their individual needs and preferences.
ACT – Help them take the next step. Is there a class, club or activity they might enjoy? Could you help them make contact with a local group or introduce them to new people?
Remember, it’s not about having all the answers. Sometimes, a friendly conversation, a little encouragement or simply taking the time to listen can make a real difference.
Let’s look out for one another and help make our community a more connected and welcoming place.
