A new green space for Buckingham officially opened its gates on Friday 18 September, as the Derrick Isham Allotments on Tingewick Road were unveiled at a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. The occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter for local residents, who will soon have the opportunity to grow, garden and connect with their community at the new site.
The ribbon was cut by Mrs Margaret Isham, widow of the late Councillor Derrick Isham, alongside the Mayor of Buckingham, Councillor Fran Davies, marking a particularly meaningful moment as the new allotment site officially took the name of Councillor Isham in recognition of his contribution to the town and its community.
The ceremony brought together current and former Buckingham Town Councillors, members of the local community and those who have helped bring the new allotments forward.
The new allotments will provide opportunities for residents to enjoy growing their own fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers, while also creating a place where people can spend time outdoors, develop gardening skills and become part of a local allotment community.
The Derrick Isham Allotments provide 40 half-size (125m2) allotment plots, offering local residents the opportunity to grow their own food and enjoy the many benefits of having an allotment.
As well as providing space for gardening, allotments can be a great way to get outdoors and exercise, learn new skills, relax and take a break from everyday life, and meet other people within the allotment community. Growing your own food can also have environmental benefits by reducing the need to purchase food that has travelled long distances or uses extensive packaging.
The allotments are available to residents of the Parish of Buckingham. Anyone interested in taking on a plot can register their interest with Buckingham Town Council and will then be added to the waiting list.
