The Green Ring Policy

Buckingham as an historic market town has always been surrounded by green fields, and indictators of the agricultural nature of the surrounding land.

Talking Points:

  • Open Green Space is very important to the community.
  • It would be enhanced by connecting these green spaces so far as possible to continue the sense of being surrounded by green space when living or working in Buckingham.
  • Green corridors could provide access to the Town Centre and/or other green and blue infrastructure.

The Plan will deliver:

  • Development in the proximity “will be required to align their public open space requirements with its objectives, so that they contribute to its successful formation and maintenance. Proposals that will lead to the unnecessary loss of Green Ring land or features that will prejudice the completion of the Green Ring will not be supported.”
  • The Independent Examiner called this an “interesting and innovative policy”.

Private Open Green Space

A very successful policy from the 2015 Plan was the requirement for good-quality private green space for new homes.

Talking Points:

Private open space is very important for a great variety of reasons including:

  • Play space
  • Gardening/Grow your own
  • Hobbies
  • Drying washing
  • Peace & Quiet/Well-being

This has been carried forward into the new Plan

  • At least 11m in length at the rear of the property for a family home.
  • If the home is a flat, suitable alternatives such as provision of a balcony will be sought.
