Bourton Park Footbridge Update

In October 2019, Buckingham Town Council commissioned a full structural survey of all the timber footbridges in Bourton Park. The survey, carried out by professional engineers, identified several bridges needing maintenance, including the replacement of worn-out decking, timber, and support posts.

What Happened to Bridge 2?

The inspection revealed that Bridge 2, built using glued laminated timber (glulam), had reached the end of its safe service life. It was deemed structurally unsound and, for safety reasons, needed to be removed.

Replacing this bridge was carefully considered. However, due to the significant costs involved in building a new structure—and the close proximity of Bridge 1, just 30 metres away—the Council decided that replacement was not a cost-effective option.

Path Realignment & Public Right of Way

To maintain safe and convenient access for pedestrians, the Council proposed a new 40-metre section of tarmac footpath linking the path from the Bourton Road directly to Bridge 1. This provides a smooth and accessible route into Bourton Park.

In 2023, the Council submitted an application to Buckinghamshire Council’s Rights of Way Team to formally divert the existing public right of way (BUC/27/3) along this new path. The application has now entered the public consultation phase.

Temporary Diversions During Works

During the demolition of Bridge 2, pedestrian access will be temporarily diverted. Clear signage and safety barriers will guide you around the edge of the Bourton Park car park, safely redirecting you across Bridge 1
