Meet Elf on the Shelf and have your picture taken in a giant snow globe – free fun at Buckingham Christmas Lights Switch On!

Have your photo taken in a giant snow globe, completely free at this year’s fantastic Buckingham Christmas Lights Switch On, on Saturday 27th November from 4 pm. A brilliant opportunity for anyone wishing to tick this experience off their wish list!

The snow globe is just one of many brand new features for this year’s event, which takes place in Buckingham town centre. There will be a chance to meet the Elf on the Shelf (on the ground) and a fully packed festive market, which will run from 4 – 8 pm. The market offers hot food and drink, including delicious mulled wine, tasty burgers, waffles, cakes and artisan hot chocolate.  Other stalls will be selling wreaths, traditional toys, handmade gifts, luxury candles, ceramics, personalised gifts and more.
Support from local traders for the event is high, with a number of local shops offering pop up stalls at the market, including Howe’s the Florist, the University Book Shop and Finca El Monte, while others plan to keep their shops open late on the day including Dandy Lions and Cornwall Place Kitchen.
A wonderful line up of entertainment begins at 4pm with young people from Stagecoach Buckingham, followed by Winslow Concert Band, Sami: the Bard of Buckingham and recorder ensemble Strictly Recorders. From 6.30 pm at the Main Stage area Bittersweet Music singer Suzy Smith will lead the crowd to sing along to some Christmas carols. The light switch on itself will happen at 7pm, after a countdown led by the Mayor of Buckingham.
Last Christmas the Town Council marked the start of the season with an at-home Christmas Lights Switch On.  A video was produced of homes and businesses brightly coloured displays and set to music from the Bard of Buckingham. The Town Council hopes that this same community spirit will lead to a fantastic atmosphere at the Christmas Lights Switch On event.
This year, the icicle lights hung around the town will be joined by a new set of white and gold motifs on lamp posts.  The Christmas tree has again been provided Buckinghamshire Council.  The star on top was donated to the town by the Buckingham branch of the Women’s Institute.
Cllr. Robin Stuchbury, Chair of the Town Centre and Events Committee told us: “After not being able to hold a Christmas lights switch on event last year, Town Council staff have been working with the Town Centre & Events Committee to ensure that this year’s event provides a valuable opportunity for the community to welcome the coming of Christmas in Buckingham.  The event, and the lights themselves, are provided thanks to the planning and investment undertaken by Buckingham Town Councillors in previous years.  We continue to facilitate and provide Christmas lights to support our local economy and long may that remain the case.”
