  • Learn Italian – In late September 2017 Knights Languages’ first Italian Language & Lifestyle club started in Brackley. They are now going to run a beginner and an intermediate course in Buckingham as from late April 2018 at the Lace Hill Community centre. The beginners course is aimed for those who don’t speak any Italian, whilst the intermediate course is aimed for those who have completed the beginners course or that have learnt a little of the language previously and are familiar with greetings, answering questions about themselves or others, numbers, alphabet and basic grammar. The idea started from our very own Brackley full time mum, Ginevra.Ginevra wanted to do something with her spare time that would enrich the local communities with a club which wouldn’t be the usual boring 1-hour (it’s all about the grammar) lesson. In fact the lessons are planned to get straight into conversational Italian with fun games, support groups, cooking tips and there will also be some food and drinks tasting, talk about art, culture, Italian costumes and traditions. The lessons are aimed at everyone. You could be someone who loves holidays in Italy or toying with the idea of moving there; you might simply want to expand your CV or just have a bit of fun!The reviews received are just great. Here’s some examples:Italy is a beautiful country and Italian a beautiful language.  Ginevra has designed a brilliant formula to make learning the language fun.  Experiencing the wonderful food and learning about the culture makes the challenge of learning Italian easier.  The classes are relaxed and informal, and the support offered between classes is excellent – you will really want to visit Italy when the course finishes! For further information please e-mail or call 07940 711 790.

Buckinghamshire Lace is a very fine pillow lace, and the making of it provided an income for local women until the First World War, especially here in Buckingham. Lace making is part of the Town’s industrial heritage.

A typical Buckinghamshire Lace motif is the ‘cucumber’, a short fat oval with a line of holes (to represent seeds) inside; the Mayor’s jabot, a decorative collar, has a strip of cucumber pattern lace. Very complex patterns might need as many as a hundred bead-weighted bobbins and these were often carved and decorated.

Town Councillors chose a mixture of names for the streets on Lace Hill– some tools, like Pillow, Bobbin, Linen, Silk, and some stitches, like Mayflower, Butterfly, Constance and Rosemary.

As for the name for the estate: Lace Hill is just for ease of reference. This does not need to form part of the postal address. The Town Council is grateful for the expert help of Kay Bradley, Kay Meadows and Helene Hill in compiling the list of possible street names.
